A.W. Bauer X Niklas Nyström

Updated: 2 days ago

When A.W. Bauer creates a garment, a connection occurs with the future owner, making this piece singular, off the rack. Each garment made in our atelier is more than just clothing; it's a testament of the meaningful moments to be experienced.

There lies the essence of Bespoke. In this singularity that enhances life itself.

High-end comes with high expectations! And only the finest savoir-faire associated with the right design can deliver the stories a garment is meant to tell.

"Each piece is designed not only to withstand the test of time and changes in fashion trends but also to elevate the moments they were meant for."

This is what we aimed for when working on adding a remote option to our bespoke shirt service. It was the first condition, and quite a conundrum, to be able to propose this service widely. But after multiple considerations, tweaking and tests we had the potent system we were looking for. The only missing element was the gas to launch the rocket.

Creation of the Capsule

When a true sartorial enthousiast comes across such a singular and unique system, some sparkles start shining at the corner of the eyes. That's how Niklas Nyström got hooked and decided to follow up closely the potential behind this new feature.

Nicke is known for sharing his genuine passion for garments to a well informed community of gentlemen, gathered by a common sensitivity for craftsmanship and beauty in menswear tailoring. His trusted tastes for the finest quality and the best experience made him one of the rare trustworthy actors of this knowledgeable crowd and, therefore, the best possible match for us to prove the excellence of our Bespoke remote craft.

Niklas heard about the conception of the remote system in the middle of its creation. Great opportunity to get his feedback as an experienced customer, but also as an IT guy, to perfect any potential flaw.

The natural follow up, and our usual process in bespoke creation, led to the creation of a first shirt, and its success paved the way for something bigger: a limited capsule collaboration.

Niklas worked with us to design three shirts he considers being essentials of any man's wardrobe, for a versatile range of life's occasions, each crafted to convey a feeling of what is represented while maintaining enough classicism so that anyone could possibly adapt the universe they illustrate to their own use.

These shirts feature exclusive bespoke details and are made from exceptional limited fabrics. As with all bespoke pieces, they can be tailored to your measurements and fit desires—subject to fabric availability.

Without any further ado, let us introduce you A.W. Bauer X Niklas Nyström capsule:

All Man Needs

AWB-AMN/01 - Office Blues

"The softness is incredible... It's too comfortable to be limited to office wear."

This shirt required quite some head scratching. Tackling a classic was the right entrance point to our capsule but such a project is always more risky than it seems. Simple in appearance, things get tricky when the aiming isn't just a great shirt but an exceptional garment.

The result speaks for itself. The shirt looks stunning, but what truly sets it apart is its incredible capacity to combine two opposites. It’s the perfect go-to blue shirt for a tie-on office day and yet, pop off two buttons, and you get the ideal Weekend / Friday after work piece.

This is no chance deeds. First, the collar is large enough and especially designed to sit gracefully on the lower neck. It's an invitation to wear it in a more relaxed context.

Then comes the fabric: soft, feather-light without giving transparencyIt provides a sensation similar to wearing the finest Sea Island cottons, thanks to a unique silk protein treatment developed in Zurich, Switzerland, which enhances both the softness and durability of the cotton.

This shirt is asking to be worn in most circumstances and the fabric ensures as many wears as cotton properties of this quality is meant to handle. Office Blues is designed to be a classic among the classics.

AWB-AMN/02 - Ivy Roll

"This collar is not something you can get elsewhere."

The Ivy League oxford shirt left an indelible mark on menswear, making the button-down some of the most versatile piece every man probably had the occasion to wear at least once.

(To learn the history behind this collar, read our previous article "Bend It Like Brooks Brothers")

The design of this shirt began with Niklas' realization that he didn’t own a button-down shirt he could fully rely on, mainly because none of the fabrics had the textured look of oxford cloth with the soft feel he desired.

The heart of this project was finding the right fabric. We chose a Royal Oxford, woven in Italy by one of the oldest and finest mills, Thomas Mason. Made from Giza 45 Egyptian cotton, known as the "queen" of all Egyptian cottons, it’s grown in a small region of the Nile Delta and harvested by hand. This cotton, with its fine, long, and durable fibers, produces fabrics of incomparable quality.

The finishing touch was ensuring this shirt would withstand years of wear, immune to trends. The intemporality of a great OCBD lies in its collar and the perfect roll it creates, whether worn open or with a tie. Generously sized collar peaks and precisely placed buttons makes it all.

The Ivy Roll is our take over an icon of the menswear History. Heritage, intemporality and versatility, this is a shirt built to be worn most seasons of the year for at least a good decade lifetime! A longevity most garments could boast having.

AWB-AMN/03 - Caribbean Haze

This one creates an instant blast when I wear it. It's never long before I'm asked where it's coming from. A real eye catcher!

The last design of the capsule came about almost as a joke. While we aimed to create pieces accessible to most men's wardrobes with classic, iconic designs, we felt a bold finale was essential. After all, Bespoke is about adding something special.

Inspired by Niklas' vision of a paradise island (picture him lounging in the shade of a palm tree with a fresh cocktail nearby), we decided to reinterpret a menswear icon that has made a strong comeback in recent years: the Hawaiian shirt. The challenge was creating something vibrant, without falling into something too clashing. The key was finding a balance between boldness and precision. We crafted an incredible eye catcher collar, perfectly proportioned with a beautiful natural roll. Such a beautiful shape, paired with the right fabric makes for a standard in its category. A new reference to propose when tackling this type of summer shirt.

Albini's fine printed fabrics are known for their tastefully curated range. Though limited, their prints are made with care and precision, using the best techniques and inks for a long-lasting, vivid palette. The fabric itself is lightweight and soft, yet durable enough to hold its shape throughout the longest days, or nights.

With the term "classic" we tend to think in term of simplicity. Some designs, although more complexe, colorful or culturally exotic, also deserve this status.

This is what we were aiming for this shirt. The Caribbean Haze was crafted to be an instant A.W. Bauer classic, designed with such taste, attention to detail, and craftsmanship that you'll feel confident wearing it in any unformal contexts, with your only worry being a splash of your favorite cocktail.

It's a Wrap!

When working on a new project, there's always a mix of excitement and nerves before the garment finally rests on the owner's shoulders. Like a grand Première. Weeks of work go into it, from the design session to gathering fabric and crafting the piece. And you can't cheat a Première. So when Niklas expressed his amazement at the shirts we created together, that familiar joy of seeing expectations meet reality was pure bliss. Unlike a grand Première though, the applause was replaced by Niklas' exclamations and the hubbub from the Atelier where master tailors were already confectioning their next stories on the precious fabrics lying around.

This capsule is an introduction to A.W. Bauer's craftsmanship. Wherever you are in the world, you get an access ticket to the excellence of the finest Scandinavian Bespoke.
